Wasim Akram

Full name Wasim Akram
Born June 3, 1966, Lahore, Punjab
Major teams Pakistan, Hampshire, Lahore, Lancashire
Batting style Left-hand bat
Bowling Style Left-arm fast

When Wasim Akram took the ball in his hand, a lot of action was assured. As a bowler capable of actual pace, brilliant control and able to swing the bowl on both sides of the wicket, Wasim Akram emerged as the most successful left arm quickie of the time. He made his debut against New Zealand in 1985 and made a mark in the second Test itself by taking a 10 wicket haul.

With time Wasim Akram just kept getting better and better and by the end of his career he was the only bowler to have taken over 500 ODI wickets. Wasim Akram was quite good with the bat as well. The fact that he wasn’t just a pinch hitter, incapable of playing masterful innings was established with his wonderful 257 not out against Zimbabwe. He also made two other centuries and seven fifties. He was a good successor to Imran Khan as a natural leader and excellent player.

Wasim Akram played 104 Tests 356 ODIs in his long career that spanned for almost two decades. He was unceremoniously left out of the Pakistani squad after the disastrous 2003 World Cup campaign. He retired soon after from cricket and took up the job of a television presenter and carried his popularity from one forte to the other.
